After eight seasons, the 'mother' in How I Met Your Mother was finally revealed last night.
It took until the dying seconds of this season's finale but, after eight excruciatingly long years, fans of the hit CBS show, How I Met Your Mother, were finally given a glimpse of the woman Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) eventually marries – the 'mother' of the programme's title.
Monday night's episode, Something New, revealed Cristin Milioti as the actress who will play the, as yet unnamed, character who puts an end to Ted's fruitless search for love in New York. Milioti's appearance was fleeting but the fact that she was clutching the infamous yellow umbrella as she queued for a ticket at the train station was a clear indication to fans of her identity (Ted's future love has previously been described as The Girl With The Yellow Umbrella).
Milioti is best known for her performance in the stage production of Once but she is set to star alongside Leonardo Di Caprio in The Wolf of Wall Street, Martin Scorsese's crime drama based on Jordan Belfort's memoir, a role which will raise her profile considerably.
Carter Bays, executive producer and co-creator of How I Met Your Mother said in a statement: "It was a pretty big umbrella to fill, casting the title role in a series that's been on the air for eight years." However, he described Milioti as "exactly what we were looking for."
Fans of the show can expect to see much more of Milioti next year in the ninth and final series of How I Met Your Mother.
How I Met Your Mother is on E4 on Thursdays at 8.30pm
