  • How To Dress Like Your Favorite Musician: Stylist Tips With Toyo

New York City-based stylist, Toyo Tsuchiya spends her days picking out the clothes that make your favorite musicians look cool. Believe it or not, it usually takes a stylist who knows what’s what in the fashion world to create those effortless looks you see musicians rocking in mags and on stage. That’s not to say that musicians don’t have their own style, but maximizing that to create looks that really pop is where people like Toyo come in.

She’s worked with artists like Lykke Li, Chromeo and Tegan and Sara, and most recently styled the of-the-moment duo Purity Ring. We caught up with her to get some tips for dressing like you’re famous (or just dressing like you might be someday.) Click through the list above to get the inside scoop with Toyo's Stylist Tips.
  • 1. Sex Appeal

Toyo says: "It depends on the band, but if sex appeal is a big part of their look I cater to pulling clothing that enhances it. With male singers, it can be easy to attract sex appeal with just throwing a tank top or a loose worn in tee. As for women it just really depends on their style and if sex appeal is what they want to show."

  • 2. Prints and Patterns

Toyo Says: "Since this is such a huge and easy trend, it works so well with fun indie bands like Purity Ring. Megan (singer) is such a fun girl and has an awesome laid back personality--it only made sense to have an assortment of different printed, drapey shirts for her with patterned and shiny legging options. Corin (instrumentals) has more of laid back street style. Printed tees, tops and baseball hats are huge for menswear so it was a no brainer to add prints underneaths his jacket."
  • 3. Be Comfortable

Toyo says: "You always want clothes to be on par with the band’s image. I usually research the band to see what their style is in general at previous concerts, photo shoots and music videos. And of course I always listen to their music. I never push them into something that they don't like or feel uncomfortable in.

These are rules for myself, however there are always exceptions to the rules where the band is super open minded and they just want you to pick whatever you think will look best for the shoot or video."
  • 4. Essentials To Have In Your Closet

Toyo Says: "Everyone should own these items:

    • Printed socks

    • Beat up old band tees

    • Colorful or patterned sunglasses

    • Combat boots

    • Baseball hat

    • Worn in jeans and shorts"
  • 5. Try These "Now" Trends

Toyo Says: "The 90s are full in swing right now but modernized for our digital century. Streetwear is huger than ever for guys. Skate brands are getting bolder with fashion in general so a guy can shop anywhere and still be apart of what is going on trend-wise if that's what they are into. Ie. Vans did a collaboration with Kenzo. Guys are getting just as bold as women with their clothing so it's a great thing for them to embrace!

Lots of skin for women, crop tops, cut out dresses, short jean cutoffs and a lot of embellishments on top of this wonderful craziness! Expect to see everyone dress like they are at Coachella all the time."
