On this day in 1980, Lipps, Inc.’s “Funkytown,” was #1 on the Billboard Top 100

It may have been topping the Hot 100 chart in 1980, but this family-friendly beat still makes regular appearances at weddings and middle school dances to pull even the most uncoordinated person out on the dancefloor. It’s said that the tune was inspired by the band’s longing to move out of Minneapolis to a place that would “keep me moving, keep me grooving with some energy…” Specifically, New York City.
