You might know Ariana Grande for her role on Nickelodeon’s sitcom Victorious. The talented young lady caught our attention when she dropped her new single, “Baby I.” The production has a real throwback vibe to it that sparks strong comparisons to Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby.” Did we mention her vocal range?
Most Disney/Nickelodeon stars who try to transition into the music industry sound similar and usually turn back to acting. Only a few have found mainstream success through music including Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and it looks like Ariana Grande is shaping up to be next in line. She first wowed us with her hit single “The Way” featuring Mac Miller, which peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.
While “The Way” is still blowing our minds the Victorious star releases a summer love anthem that’ll garner a massive new fan base in no time. Her ability to shift between falsettos and full blown belting is superb. In an interview with MTV, Grande stated, “You know I love old R&B. I love the ’90s, that whole vibe. I love Mariah Carey, of course, she’s the goddess of all vocals.”
Within two hours of the release, “Baby I” made its way to the number two spot on iTunes top songs. The single will be featured on her debut album Yours, Truly due out in September.
