She's taken a lot of flak recently for everything from the poor sales of her last album, MDNA, to allegedly trying to recapture her lost youth. But when it comes to the measure that matters, Madonna's having the last laugh -- she tops the new Forbes magazine list of the highest-earning celebrities.
Forbes estimates that Madonna, 55, earned in the neighborhood of $125 million between June of last year and this year. Much of that revenue came from her MDNA tour, which performed far better than its album namesake, grossing some $305 million globally. Madonna's also got merchandise, clothing and fragrance sales, plus other investments, adding to her bottom line.
It's worth noting that Forbes says supposedly over-the-hill Madonna earned more in 2012-2013 than in all the time they've been compiling their celebrity earnings lists. This, despite the fact she placed fifth on last months' Forbes list of the most powerful celebs, a ranking based on earnings plus marketability and media presence. Lady Gaga placed second on that list, but on this new list, when ranked on earnings alone, she drops all the way to tenth, with $80 million. In fairness, Gaga kept a pretty low profile for half the survey period, only recently re-emerging to promote her upcoming album, ARTPOP.
Madonna and Lady Gaga are the only musicians in the Forbes top-ten highest-earning celebrities list. The only other music-related entry in top ten is producer and The X Factor judge Simon Cowell, who comes in third with $95 million.
