A match-winning field goal in golden-point extra time in the final round of the season was enough for Cooper Cronk to narrowly edge out Johnathan Thurston, Daly Cherry-Evans and Todd Carney for this year's Dally M Medal.

At The Star in Sydney on Tuesday night, the Melbourne halfback was crowned rugby league's player of the year, finishing two points ahead of Thurston, Cherry-Evans and Carney.

A hamstring injury forced Carney out of Cronulla's last two games of the season. However, going into the last round he was equal with Cronk on 26 points and two points clear of Thurston and Cherry-Evans.

Both Thurston and Cherry-Evans polled two points in the last round but Cronk's field goal in a thriller against the Titans saw the Queensland halfback take out the award for the first time.

The Kangaroos No. 7, who joined Cameron Smith (2006) and Billy Slater (2011) as one of three Storm players to win the Dally M medal, also took out the halfback of the year award.
