Perhaps the reason Sir Alex Ferguson wrote that Steven Gerrard is not a 'top, top player' is he remembers being turned down by the Liverpool captain when he was 14
Judging by his dig at Steven Gerrard in his fascinating memoirs, Sir Alex Ferguson may never have forgotten how a 14-year-old turned down a three-year deal with Manchester Unitedin 1994.
Ferguson may even remember having dinner with the midfielder, who impressed in two trial games for United. “He desperately wanted me to sign,’’ recalled Gerrard in 2006.
United kept sending “we want you” letters to Gerrard at his home in Huyton.
Shortly after that meal, Gerrard walked into Steve Heighway’s office at Liverpool’s academy, mentioned the interest of United (and Spurs, Manchester City, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Everton among others) and walked out with the promise of a decent YTS contract.
Gerrard was never going to leave the club he loved. He just wanted to nudge Liverpoolinto action and was quite prepared to use United’s pursuit as a lever in negotiations.
Ferguson, clearly, has a top, top memory.
