Third-placed City entertain Premier League leaders Liverpool on Boxing Day and Touré believes they can make a statement of intent
Yaya Touré claims Manchester City are on course for a “massive” season after ironing out the away day flaws that threatened to damage their title hopes.
City face Premier League leaders Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day having won four and drawn one of their past five away games – a run which has taken Manuel Pellegrini’s to within a point of top spot.
And with City having won all eight of their home games in the league this season, Touré believes that every competition can be targeted by the club in the new year.
“Everyone is talking about our home form, but we are starting to play this way away also,” Touré said.
“And even in the cup games at Bayern Munich and at Leicester in the Capital One Cup, we are starting to get things right and are in the right way.
“I think this season could be massive for us.
“Liverpool are a top team, but we have proved we can beat the best teams at our own stadium by playing great football and scoring goals. And that is the way we must approach this game as well.
“We are not the sort of team that is fearful of opponents, we are playing in an attractive way and an attacking way, and I think Liverpool will be aware of that.”
Liverpool have emerged as unexpected leaders approaching the halfway stage of the campaign, but Touré admits that the club’s history, and the goals of Luis Suárez, ensured that they would inevitably return to form at some stage.
“They have always been a big club,” he said. “Maybe it is a surprise that they haven’t been up there for a few years, but these clubs always return, and that’s what is happening at Liverpool.
“They have some good players around the team. Daniel Sturridge, my brother Kolo, Gerrard, Suárez. People shouldn’t be surprised to see them at the top.
“But I think this game will be watched by every fan of the Premier League, around the world. If we win we can go above them and that will be important for us too.
Touré added: “Suárez is a brilliant player, and this season he is at the top. Him and Sergio Agüero are the best strikers in England, no question, and are up there as the best in the world too.
“Suárez has everything in his game at the moment. But Liverpool are a team with other good players too and a good manager. It will be a big, big game.”
