Sam Smith's LP "In the Lonely Hour" promises to be one of 2014's standout debuts. In a new interview with the Fader, the British singer-songwriter opened up about his love life like never before.
"'In the Lonely Hour' is about a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back," Smith explains. The 22-year old says he did recently find closure by admitting to the individual that he had inspired the new album.
"It feels good to have interviews like this, to chat about it and put stuff to bed," Smith says. "It’s all there now, and I can move on and hopefully find a guy who can love me the way I love him."

In his first time speaking publicly about this particular lost love, Smith placed the emphasis on his music: "Why is [gender] a talking point? I’m singing, I’m making music, I’m performing my music—that’s what should be the talking point."Back in January, Smith described the influences behind "In the Lonely Hour" in an interview on the Grammys' red carpet. "I've never been in a relationship before and I really wanted to make an album that was about love," he said. "But in different forms of love -- so unrequited love and loneliness. I've been brutally honest in the album."
Several days ago, Smith shared the video for the new single "Leave Your Lover," in which he finds himself trapped in a love triangle."In the Lonely Hour" drops June 17 via Capitol. It also features songs like "Money on My Mind," "Stay With Me" and "Not in That Way."
