  • 10 Reasons Why You Should Watch The 2014 mtvU Woodie Awards

Not totally sure what The Woodies are all about? No problem, that’s where we come in! While awards shows like The GRAMMYs and The VMAs take center stage, (we definitely love them too), mtvU’s Woodie Awards are the portal into the minds of people who love music the most: the fans! Awards are given out according to votes cast by people just like you. The Woodies are the birthplace of tomorrow biggest stars. From Macklemore to Kings of Leon and even Kanye West, it’s the stage where some of the most talented musicians on earth first get recognition.

Then there’s the performances. This year’s lineup includes pop’s crown divas, the hip-hop artists everyone wants a piece of and vocalists with pipes so beautiful your ears will thank you for weeks. Mark March 16 in your calendar, because you’ve got plans. Here are ten reasons why you should watch the 2014 mtvU Woodie Awards!

  • 1. This is where hip-hop stars are born.

Do the names Kanye West, Macklemore, Danny Brown, Pusha T, and Joey Bada$$ sound familiar? The mtvU Woodies have a longstanding relationship with burgeoning hip-hop talent. Those names are just a few of the rappers who have performed at the Woodies, or received an award. With people like Chance the Rapper and Vic Men$a involved in this year’s show, that relationship is just getting stronger.

  • 2. Get to know what the kids are into.

The Woodies are undoubtedly the awards of the youth. While awards shows can veer towards the glossy and formal, the Woodies pay homage to the kinds of criteria and types of artists that appeal to a young, fresh audience. You know what they say, the children are the future.
  • 3. Iggy Azalea is getting “Fancy” with Charli XCX

Have you seen the latest music video “Fancy” from the Australian queen of hip-hop? We’ll just say this: it features Charli XCX and the two divas recreate the entire Clueless movie. The pair is set to take the stage at The Woodies and get extra extra fancy for all to see. If you haven’t already, check out our interview with Alejandra Hernandez, Iggy’s stylist to find out more about the ‘90s deliciousness that is the wardrobe for the “Fancy” video.
  • 4. Democracy, yay!

The awards are given out based on votes. That’s right--it’s totally up to the fans to decide which artists deserve to take home the gold. Democracy AND music? The inauguration doesn’t even know what’s coming for it.
  • 5. Because, Childish Gambino

If you’re not familiar with the intricate, compelling and totally brilliant lyricism of Childish Gambino AKA Donald Glover, this is your chance to fall for him. Gambino will take the stage for a live performance and it’s one for the ages. Don’t miss it!
  • 6. Sam Smith has the voice of an angel.

Not familiar? Get to know him as our Artist of the Week!
  • 7. They’ve got covers covered.

The mtvU Woodies are the only awards show to give credit to the beauty of perfecting a cover. Vampire Weekend covering Robin Thicke? Low covering Rihanna? Yes please.
  • 8. Reward artists who do it their way!

The Woodies encourage artists to do the brave and unprecedented things that shock and awe us every year. It’s all about supporting the bold and brave.
  • 9. There are EVEN MORE amazing performances!

If you haven’t heard enough already--London Grammar, The 1975, Bleachers AND Vic Men$a are all performing at this year’s show!
  • 10. Teamwork make the dream work.

It’s all about working together in the Best Collaborations category. Chance the Rapper and James Blake are nominated for “Life Round Here.” We love a good duo to keep things fresh.
