Musical Acts Taking Over The Fashion World In 2014
The space between the worlds of fashion and music has never been smaller. Runway shows used to be scored exclusively by custom electronic composers, ethereal and up-tempo tracks to accompany the wondrous mystery that is fashion. Now runway shows are parties in-and-of themselves with tracks and performances from the likes of Azealia Banks, A$AP Rocky, Rita Ora, and more.
Designers are turning fashion into an all-encompassing experience. Fashion houses and smaller labels alike are putting sounds to their name, prescribing music to their styles and celebs whose names resonate every time we see the designer duds they represent. Lets check out five of the musical acts the fashion world can't get enough of in 2014./p>
1. Proenza Schouler Loves Chairlift's Caroline Polacheck
Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are the two minds behind Proenza Schouler. Since the duo's take off in 2002, Proenza Schouler skyrocketed to fashion fame with bold prints, boxy designs and a line of accessories that have become a staple for fashionistas everywhere. Jack and Lazaro teamed up with Chairlift frontwoman, Caroline Polacheck to score their mini-documentary. The video explains the official pronunciation of the brand's name, along with its origin. The score adds an enticing and magical element to the team's artistic explanation.
2. Nomia Loves Kim Gordon
Nomia is an NYC-based clothing brand that embodies the best aspects of early ‘90s fashion. Taking inspiration from Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth's clothing line, X-Girl, designer Yara Flinn channeled her nostalgia in a modern way. Nomia's most recent collection introduces colorful, specialty fabrications used to accent bomber jackets and split-seam tunics. It's only fitting that the brands Fall/Winter 2014 campaign video features music from none other than Kim Gordon. The video's entire backing track is Gordon's performance for Issue Project room. 3. DKNY Loves A$AP Rocky
Donna Karan's DKNY has made a comeback, crowning Cara Delevingne as the face of the brand. Her Spring/Summer 2014 campaign video features the best of the best in terms of models and musicians. The video features Cara, Jourdan Dunn and A$AP Rocky dancing on top of taxi cabs and all but frolicking the streets of NYC. To top off an already aesthetically perfect campaign video, A$AP Rocky remixed his hit, "Fashion Killa" to include the DKNY name to accompany the video.
4. Alexander Wang Loves Diplo & Mad Decent
Alexander Wang made a name for himself by blurring the line between high fashion and streetwear. With his bold black and whites, neon accents, and celeb support, Alexander Wang is everywhere. He has also been a designer that incorporated music into his work. His T by Alexander Wang line features music and campaigns starring Azealia Banks and Diplo. For his Fall/Winter 2014 runway show, Wang used all Mad Decent (owned by producer Diplo) music and artists, including Pharrell's latest "Aerosol Can." He brought his influence and appreciation for other artists straight to the runway.
5. Jeremy Scott Loves Nicki Minaj, Big Sean and 2NE1
Jeremy Scott teamed up with Adidas to bring some of the wackiest, most colorful and cool sneakers to the streets. These shoes defy any previous concept of what constitutes a sneaker—glow in the dark, gold, plush teddy bear heads and even wings. This video brings fashion and music together with absolute symmetry. Taking some of the craziest style icons in music: Nicki Minaj, 2NE1 and Big Sean, artists known for their use of color and oddity, Jeremy Scott seems to be moving full speed ahead with his unique fashion vision.
