Janus FilmsA newly-restored version of The Beatles' first movie, A Hard Day's Night, will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on June 24 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the film's premiere. In addition, the flick will be screened in a variety of U.S. theaters for one night only on July 4.
The revamped flick was restored using the latest digital technology, starting with a nearly complete original 35-millimeter camera negative as the main source, and the finished product was approved by A Hard Day's Night director Richard Lester. It also features a soundtrack with a newly-created 5.1 surround mix overseen by producer Giles Martin at London's Abbey Road Studios.
A Hard Day's Night will be available as a three-disc dual format Blu-ray/DVD collection and as a single DVD. The multi-disc package will offer a bevy of bonus features, including audio commentary by cast and crew members; a 2002 documentary about the making of A Hard Day's Night featuring Lester, Beatles producer George Martin and screenwriter Alun Owen; new pieces that focus on Lester's early film projects and directing methods; and a new interview with acclaimed Beatles author Mark Lewison.
A Hard Day's Night, which premiered on July 6, 1964, took a humorous, cartoonish, fictional look at the lives of the band's members during the height of Beatlemania. The movie included scenes of the Fab Four performing such classic tunes as the title track, "Can't Buy Me Love," "I Should Have Known Better," and "If I Fell," and went on to influence the music video as we know it.
As for the theatrical screenings, the restored movie is confirmed to be shown in dozens of locations across the U.S. on July 4. In addition, a special screening has been scheduled for July 6 at the Catalina Island Museum in Avalon, California, which will include an in-person appearance by the late George Harrison's first wife, Pattie Boyd, who appeared in A Hard Day's Night and met Harrison on the film's set.
