• The Essential Fall Pop Album Guide

Pop music in 2013 is coming in with some serious heat.  There are a ton of artists who've made or are gearing up to make their fall debuts. This list is dedicated to ones you need to hear. Get ready!
  • Britney Spears, Britney Jean

Britney waltzed into the classroom (literally) as a freshman with “Baby One More Time.” She could run through cheeky choreography better than Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson combined and showed the world the perfect way to look sad and happy at the same time. Where do you think “duck face” came from? Britney Spears’ pout undoubtedly contributed. Over fourteen years later, Britney’s been a stewardess, a circus ring-leader, a mother, a major club artist dropping dubstep beats and even — lest we forget — bald. During her illustrious career spanning over a decade, Spears took pop music to places no one ever thought to before.

Last year we saw her head up vocals for will.i.am’s smash hit “Scream and Shout.” The pair worked so well together, Spears named him executive producer on her upcoming eighth studio album, Britney Jean. We’ve heard whispers that she’s also enlisted hip-hop producer Hit-Boy and is planning a Vegas residency to help promote.  Her versatility is beyond-proven, so while her recent kid-friendly single, “Ooh La La,” from The Smurfs 2 shows a side of Brit we might now know as well, there’s no question in our eyes that Mama B will turn it up this coming fall. If the first single, "Work" is any indication, Britney's here to prove she's still #1.
  • Lady Gaga, ARTPOP

Mother Monster quickly became one of the most controversial pop stars of this generation, her meat dresses and general lack of pants helped push her larger-than-everything persona into the spotlight so rapidly it’s actually hard to imagine a time when she was still known simply as Stefani.

Gaga prepares to release her fourth studio album ARTPOP on November 11. She's enlisted figures like Jeff Koons, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Marina Abramović and Robert Wilson to help promote the album; as a result, Gaga’s got the art world's eyes locked on her. The first single off the album "Applause," came to life in an incredible performance at the VMAs. If you caught her take the stage during the iTunes Festival you got to hear eight songs off the album. Missed it? No worries, Gaga's second promotional single "Dope" is due out November 4. Cue the applause.
  • Jason DeRulo, Tattoos

Jason DeRulo broke onto the scene with his No. 1 hit, “Whatcha Say,” after working as a songwriter for artists like Pitbull, Cassie, and Birdman. The young R&B singer now has three studio albums under his belt and has quickly earned himself a place on pop music’s varsity team. His latest album Tattoos dropped on September 30. His sound has matured over the course of his career, and his latest offering displays a concise, razor-sharp sound. With a feature verse from rapper 2 Chainz and a marriage proposal to duet-partner Jordin Sparks in song form, the album is sure to make major waves.

The video for the album’s latest single, “Marry Me,” sees DeRulo and Sparks kicking it at home, baking muffins and getting down to some major life decisions. Marriage and tattoos? Sounds like DeRulo's really got commitment on the brain!

  • Justin Timberlake

Is anyone else still reeling from Justin Timberlake's epic musical retrospective at the 2013 VMAS? JT has had an incredible year. From releasing his sixth studio album, The 20/20 Experience, to touring with Jay Z, to heading up an N’Sync reunion, it’s almost like there isn’t really much more that a human being could accomplish. Since his introduction to the entertainment industry, Timberlake has proven time and time again that his capabilities exceed what we expect from any normal performer. He is a true visionary, and the fact that he gave us an entire second installment of The 20/20 Experience, his recent 2 of 2, makes it seem like he's never going to fade. Pick up 2 of 2 on iTunes and listen to "Give Me What I Don't Know (I Want)" above.
  • Austin Mahone, Junior Year

Austin Mahone is the latest teenage heartthrob to capture the eyes and ears of pop lovers all over the world. Crystal blue eyes, a hone-smooth voice and dance moves that would make MJ proud make him a prime candidate to take over the scene this fall. After opening for Taylor Swift on her Red Tour, Mahone announced plans to his debut album Junior Year on Universal Records. The young talent was set to headline MTV's Artist to Watch tour, but had to cancel after getting sick. Always attentive to his fans--who he affectionately refers to as "Mahomies"--he tweeted "Hope I haven't let anyone down." Something tells us his fans will stick by his side until he feels better enough to jump start the tour. We wish Austin a speedy recovery and will keep you posted when more details about the release of the album and rescheduled tour surface. Until then, watch the video for Mahone's "What About Love?" above and pick up a copy of the single on iTunes.
