VMA Performer Wishlist - Brooklyn Edition
A few weeks ago the iconic mascot of the VMAs, MoonMan took a trip through NYC. He started at Times Square, snapped a pic on the Brooklyn Bridge, visited the “Comandante Biggie” mural commemorating Notorious B.I.G. After a long day of pit stops and visits, he finally ended up at the entrance to the brand new Barclays Center. If you weren’t following his #RoadToTheVMAs on Instagram, you might have missed the announcement that the Barclays Center will be the home of the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards!
Brooklyn is a musical hot spot and has produced some of the most incredible artists in history. The VMAs always put on a high impact show packed with huge performances. This year we’d love to see the lineup honor that history and feature Brooklyn born and based artists. Here is the Pepsi Pulse VMA Performer Wishlist - Brooklyn Edition.

1. The Young Gun: Joey Bada$$
Joey Badass is one of the freshest voices in Hip Hop right now. He’s a member of the XXL Freshman Class, the new creative director of Mark Ecko’s Ecko Unltd. streetwear brand, and a featured rapper on one of the year’s hottest tracks, Asap Rocky’s, “1 Train.” The 18-year-old Brooklyn native is rising faster than we can watch him fly. After signing with Green Label Sound he paired up with the legendary DJ Premier for a new single, “Unorthodox.” We’d love to see him take the stage at the Barclay’s Center and show the VMAs just exactly where young Brooklyn is at.

2. The King: Jay-Z
Okay, he owns the place, so the chances of Jay-Z hitting the stage at the Barclay’s Center are pretty high. That’s not to say that its not a hard earned honor for the Brooklyn native. After performing eight consecutive shows there to celebrate its opening, he definitely knows the ins and outs of the venue. Then again, who are we to say Jay shouldn’t get a chance to sit back and watch all the magic happen? After all, it is his business, man.

3. The Throwback: Foxy Brown and Lil Kim
Over the years there have been many shots fired between Lil Kim and Foxy Brown, no pun intended. Imagine the ultimate reconciliation at the 30th annual VMAs, Foxy and Kim take the stage in their home borough together and squash whatever beef has plagued the two rapstress’ relationship since ‘96.

4. The Comeback: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings have been New York staples for decades. Brooklyn is the home of Daptone Records, where the Dap Kings are a house band. Jones’ soulful, thundering voice has kept the original fire of funk and soul music alive and well into 2013. They’re planning to release a new album, yet to be titled in August. Seems like the perfect time to jump on stage for the VMAs that same month.

5. The Innovators: Dirty Projectors
The Dirty Projectors have defied pretty much every genre any critic has tried to box them in. Throughout the course of creating their seven studio albums and countless other EPs and singles, their sound has carved out a new space in music. Somewhere between rock and pop, punk and soul, these Brooklynites can fill a venue with sounds that leave audience members reeling. They’d accent any VMA performance lineup MTV can come up with.

6. The Pop Pair: Matt & Kim
Never has a couple worked side by side so successfully in pop music before. The singing sweethearts hail from Brooklyn and have a fun, carefree attitude about the music they make. Matt & Kim's shows are fun, energetic and might even include some choreographed dance moves.

7. The Belle of the Ball: Solange
While Solange did grow up in Texas, she currently resides in Brooklyn with her son Julez. After being featured as Artist of the Week, there’s nothing we’d love to see more than her bringing down the house in her home neighborhood. Half the fun of seeing her play is figuring out what she’s going to be wearing.
