"We are hugely excited about this next series of Sherlock, and have worked closely with our partners, Masterpiece and PBS, to bring these episodes to U.S. audiences in January. We promise our fans that Season 3 is worth waiting for," said executive producer Sue Vertue.
The Season 3 premiere will solve the mystery behind Sherlock's "death," and Episode 2 will move onto happier things — Watson's wedding to Mary Morstan (Amanda Abbington). The season finale, entitled "The Last Vow," will air Feb. 2.
While it is assumed Season 4 is happening, no official announcement has been made. If Sherlock is to continue, it's likely fans will have to get used to the long hiatuses between seasons. A main reason behind the delay for Season 3 is the busy schedules of its two leads, Benedict Cumberbatch and Morgan Freeman, and it's unlikely either one's film career will be slowing down anytime soon.
