Solange Knowles is on fire. After releasing her debut EP True in 2012, the new R&B superstar helped redefine how the parameters of the genre are understood in pop culture. Introducing elements of New Wave dance music into her sound helped break R&B’s traditional floodgates. One short year later we’ve seen the emergence of other genre innovators like Kelela, Petite Noir, and Sampha among others. The first release from Solange’s Saint Records is a compilation of songs from some of those very artists titled Saint Heron. Solange terms them “contemporary genre defying R&B Visionaries,” which is a label that could aptly apply to the Knowles sister herself.
Saint Heron includes songs from BC Kingdom, Jade De La Fleur, Kelela, Kingdom, Iman Omari, Sampha, Petite Noir, Starchild, Cassie, India Shawn, Jhené Aiko, and, of course, Solange. Artwork for the compilation was created by artist Rashaad Newsome. He also created a custom Lamborghini for Solange to cruise around in while she promotes her new project.
