The Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare series may have been moth-balled for the year if a hastily removed listing on Tesco Direct is anything to go by.

The online retail hub of Tesco showed a listing for an item called Call Of Duty: Ghosts.

The eagle-eyed news hounds over at MCV tagged the listing earlier this afternoon, and noted that its release date was December 2013. They also snagged a screengrab of its boxart.

It's been an accepted fact for some that a new iteration in Activision's Call Of Duty shooter franchise is in the pipeline - and not just because the series makes hundreds of millions of dollars year-in and year-out.

In a recent conference call concerning the publisher's earnings, Activision CFO Dennis Durkin said: "The Call of Duty franchise continues to set the bar for innovation, and we expect the new Call of Duty game in development for 2013 to raise that bar even higher."

Durkin didn't expand on this comment so we don't know what to expect from the new Call Of Duty in terms of its setting, content, release date or even what gaming platforms it's going to appear on.

We've reached out to Activision for confirmation on whether the information concerning Call Of Duty: Ghosts is accurate. We're expecting them not to comment on rumours or speculation.
